Oxygen Leak Leaves 22 COVID-19 Patients Dead In India

At least 22 coronavirus patients have died after they lost oxygen supply for around 30 minutes due to a leak.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 21, while an oxygen tanker was refilling a storage tank at the Zakir Hussain hospital in Nashik city.

According to Nashik district collector Suraj Mandhare, the supply was interrupted after a leakage in one of the storage tankers at Dr. Zakir Hussain Municipal Hospital.

All the victims were on ventilators and in need of constant oxygen supply before the incident occurred.

The hospital had more than 150 covid-19 patients, nearly all of whom were receiving oxygen support, Chhagan Bhujbal, a minister in the state government, told reporters.

Fifteen patients were on ventilators, the most intensive form of oxygen support, and 11 of them died in the accident, Bhujbal said. Local officials said the death toll in the incident could rise.

The accident comes as India confronts a devastating second wave in the pandemic that has pushed daily cases and deaths to record highs. Hospitals in several states have been overwhelmed with patients, and demand for oxygen has soared.
